ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
The damaged area of the tooth (the pulp) is cleaned, disinfected, filled and sealed in a procedure called the root canal treatment to repair a damaged or infected tooth.

Why is root canal treatment done?
The procedure is commonly carried out for the following reasons,

1) When the pulp is affected because of a cracked tooth.
2) A deep cavity.
3) Repeated dental treatment to the tooth.
4) Other traumas.

How is the treatment carried out?
Initially, an X-ray is carried out to check if a root canal is required and if required, where it is required, by the dentist. Local anaesthesia is administered as the second step of the procedure to numb the area around the infected tooth.
An opening is made and the infected pulp is removed in a process called pulpectomy.
As the final step, filling is done with gutta percha material and the opening is sealed.

Does it pain a lot?
Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t pain any more than a tooth filling. Anaesthesia and the pain medication given after the procedure help you cope up a lot.

What precautions should be carried out after a root canal treatment?
Chewing with the tooth around which the procedure is performed should be minimised until the tenderness subsides. This may take up to 3 to 7 days.
